Make the next roof worth the investment, with the right material, sound underlying layers and a scope you understand.
A replacement is a major purchase. It should solve a roof-wide problem or deliver a useful change, rather than simply cover over an unanswered leak.
Several failing areas, shingles too brittle to repair and widespread deck damage can make starting over a better use of money. An isolated flashing problem may still be repairable. The difference should be clear before the project moves to a material choice.
Removing the old covering creates an opportunity to address the details that cannot be judged from the driveway.
Tear-off gives a view of the wood that has been carrying the roof. Sound decking can remain; soft, split or otherwise unsuitable areas need a repair decision before the new covering goes down. Agree how additional decking work will be documented and priced so a hidden finding does not turn into an unexplained change.
Underlayment provides backup beneath the covering. At eaves, rakes and valleys, the edge and starter details need to send water onto the next layer rather than behind it. The exact combination follows the selected system and the roof. A bundle count alone does not describe these connections.
Pipes, walls and chimneys interrupt the open roof surface. The flashing around them needs an explicit decision: what can remain, what needs replacement and how it will tie into the new roof. Keeping a failed junction underneath fresh shingles can leave the reason for the old leak in place.
On a vented attic, intake and exhaust work as a path, not separate decorations on the roof. Blocked intake or poorly arranged vents deserves attention during replacement. More visible roof vents do not automatically mean a better arrangement; the roof and attic configuration guide the choice.
Identify the actual shingle or panel, the color, and the matching or compatible ridge and edge pieces. Product changes can affect fastening and detailing as well as appearance. A written selection makes it easier to compare an upgrade with the baseline roof instead of comparing two vague descriptions.
Removal, debris hauling and the final condition of the work area belong in the project. Gutters and fascia need separate decisions where they are affected. Keeping usable gutters, resetting them and installing new runs are different scopes, so make their treatment visible alongside the roofing work.

Around the house
The work takes place above rooms you still use and around entrances, vehicles and plants. A practical sequence helps you know what will change during the project without relying on a generic promise that every roof takes the same number of days.
Set aside space for material delivery and debris collection. Identify the entrance that stays usable, anything fragile near the work and where vehicles need to be moved. Weather can change the working sequence.
The work plan should also settle applicable permit requirements before tear-off begins.
Removal can reveal damaged decking or an old flashing detail that needs more work. A useful change explanation connects the finding, the proposed correction and its cost. Temporary weather protection is part of planning the exposed stage.
Review the completed roof details and any agreed changes. Collect the product and applicable warranty records, and make sure the disposition of debris, gutters and other affected items matches the scope. Questions are easier to resolve while the project is still fresh.
Begin with the look you want and the roof you have. A material change can be worthwhile, but it is a change to the installed system as well as the curb appeal.
Architectural shingles offer a layered appearance with several product and color choices. Compare the actual product features, then keep the supporting roof work in the budget. Paying for a higher-grade covering while omitting needed flashing or decking is a poor trade.
